Access to care above intellectual property

For several months, the actions and initiatives to denounce the system of licenses and the outrageous prices charged by pharmaceutical laboratories have increased, in particular towards Gilead which sells the Sofosbuvir. This medicine is a very efficient treatment against hepatitis C but few people have accessed to it because of its excessive cost.

Doctors of the World (Médecins Du Monde) filed a patent challenge to Gilead's patent on sofosbuvir at the European Patent Office.

If this initiative will not have a direct impact on developing countries, it will be an outward sign sent to the pharmaceutical industry. It will also be the sign of the civil society determination to influence the drugs pricing system in order to promote access to treatment for all.

We support the initiative of Médecins du monde and we want to remind that intellectual property and the costs it generates weaken access to care and the funding of health care system.

Solthis has also signed the petition submitted by the independent group TAG – Treatment Action Group – in order to denounce the abusive utilization of licenses which prevent many people from accessing to the vital health care.
