The challenges of evaluating injectable HIV antiretroviral drugs in West Africa

Long-acting injectable antiretroviral treatments represent a major advance in the fight against HIV. Already in use in Europe and North America, they simplify treatment and improve quality of life for people living with HIV. But in West Africa? Nothing yet. Research carried out by the CRCF, IRD and Solthis to evaluate their effectiveness in real life in Senegal has been blocked for over 2 years: it has been impossible to obtain the drugs. The laboratories refuse to supply them. This blockage is preventing the production of the scientific data needed to guide public health policies. Guaranteeing access to the latest treatments is an imperative if we are to achieve our global objectives in the fight against HIV.
