Context: In a country where 70% of the population is under 25 years old, the situation regarding SRH of young people remains worrying. Contraceptive prevalence is 15.9% among 15-24 year olds, 50% of girls under 19 have already had a child, 76% of girls are married before their 18th birthday and 28% before their 15th birthday. In addition, there has been an increase in HIV prevalence over the past 10 years: from 0.1% in 2011 to 0.8% in 2019, with young women twice as likely to be infected and only 11.6% of young people receiving HIV education. In this context, Solthis and Lafia Matassa have been working together since 2016 on DSSRAJ, via the JADES project, which has enabled the... Read more

Développement des capacités et du pouvoir d'agir chez Solthis

HIV prevalence in Sierra Leone has increased from 0.9% in 2002 to 1.7% in 2019. It is higher among women than men (2.2% versus 1.1%) and significantly higher among key populations such as men who have sex with men, transgender people, sex workers, drug users and prisoners. Only less than a third (29%) of the 80,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the country were on antiretroviral treatment in 2020 (UNAIDS Sierra Leone), a far cry from the 95% target set by the international community by 2025. The elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV also remains a challenge for the country. In response to these challenges, Sierra Leone is committed to improving the HIV response to accelerate... Read more

MALISTRENGTHENING SYSTEMS AND HEALTH SERVICESFighting HIV / AIDS

Context The reform of the health sector in Mali, comprising several strategic axes, is now the reference for both the government and technical and financial partners in the fight for better health in the country. With reference to this reform, Mali's strategic vision is to ensure an integrated, effective, efficient and sustainable response to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and viral hepatitis in order to put an end to these epidemics. This includes, among other things, the transition to the Integrated National Strategic Plan for HIV, Tuberculosis and Viral Hepatitis. This single plan for the three epidemics is an innovation in terms of taking into account all the needs and a correct and... Read more

Improving access to sexual and reproductive health rights for Ivorian youth and adolescents Context In Ivory Coast, where the median age is 19, young people's access to sexual and reproductive health services is limited. This particularly affects young girls who are exposed to early and/or unwanted pregnancies (fertility rate of 124% for 15-19 year olds and 193% for 20-24 year olds), an over-representation of maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as gender-based violence (including female genital mutilation which affects more than a third of the adult female population and 11% of girls under 14). Women are also twice as affected as men by the HIV epidemic in Ivory Coast and the... Read more

COVACOM – Evaluating a strategy for rapid screening of Covid-19 by antigenic tests at community level

MALISTRENGTHENING SYSTEMS AND HEALTH SERVICESFighting Covid-19

Optimising the fight against Covid-19 in Mali by introducing antigenic tests at community level   Context In Mali, as in many West African countries, screening for Covid-19 relied almost exclusively on PCR tests, which were only available in 4 laboratories, all located in Bamako. In addition to this limited access, the majority of PCRs were performed for travel purposes, leading to a minority of Covid-19 suspects being identified. To address this issue, the ECoVAM project initially implemented a new screening strategy at the health centre level, based on a medical triage consultation and the use of rapid tests. This strategy has led to a sharp increase in Covid-19 screening,... Read more

Improving the sexual and reproductive health and rights of cisgender and trans sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire through an empowerment approach Context The institutional and legal environment in Côte d'Ivoire has many shortcomings in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). It is the only country in the Francophone sub-region that does not currently have a specific law on sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This lack of legislation has direct consequences on the health of the population, particularly on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Côte d'Ivoire is one of the most affected countries in the sub-region, with a prevalence rate of 2.4%, particularly among key populations,... Read more

Reducing new HIV infections, unwanted pregnancies and sexual violence among adolescents in Guinea     Context In the Republic of Guinea, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is 1.4%, which represents approximately 120,000 people living with HIV (PLHIV). This prevalence is higher among women (2.1%) than among men (1.2%), and in urban areas (2.7%) than in rural areas (1.2%). Among young people aged 15 to 24, the percentage of young people with knowledge of HIV prevention is low, especially among young girls (only 15.2% of young girls have knowledge of HIV prevention, compared to 33.8% of young boys), even though adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 in sub-Saharan Africa account for... Identify, isolate, and manage Covid-19 cases to reduce pandemic-related morbidity and mortality   Watch the video of presentation (in french) down below :   Background Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, African countries seem to be less affected, possibly due to the socio-demographic characteristics of the populations, with few elderly people and therefore carriers of chronic diseases at risk of developing severe forms. In Mali, 194,894 PCR tests have been performed since March 25, 2020, resulting in the diagnosis of 14,455 cases as of July 8, 2021, of which 5% were symptomatic, and 528 deaths. In Niger, as of August 16, 2021, only 5,724 cases have... Read more

Addressing the unique health determinants of people, animals and the environment for an agro-ecological transition and better health for all Context As the recent Covid-19 pandemic has confirmed, human health determinants are more than ever linked to animal and environmental health issues, both in the field of infectious and emerging diseases and through exposure to various chemical substances. To reduce these risks and be effective in a sustainable manner, we must work at the interface of these fields and propose innovative solutions. This is the ambition of the "One Health" approach: to better understand these interactions, to put in place the capacities to identify, prevent and... Read more

GUINEAOPERATIONAL RESEARCHFighting HIV / AIDSImprove the health of children in Africa

Context In sub-Saharan Africa, many children are still being born to mothers who were not tested for HIV during pregnancy and, therefore, did not receive antiretrovirals (ARVs) to prevent mother-to-child transmission. In Guinea, despite progress in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in recent years, fewer than two in ten HIV-exposed children receive early HIV testing and fewer than one in ten HIV-infected children receive treatment. Early detection of HIV in infants whose mothers are living with HIV is a crucial issue to enable immediate treatment of infected children. Indeed, without testing, infected children cannot benefit from treatment and, without... Read more

HELP REDUCE THE IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 EPIDEMIC ON PATIENTS AND HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN 20 HEALTH FACILITIES IN NIGER AND GUINEA Background On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared Covid19 a pandemic. Beyond the health effects caused by the virus itself and the need to protect local populations and health professionals, a major issue is related to maintaining the use of health care by communities and the continuity of essential services, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health (IMCI), sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and HIV care. In fact, despite the easing of government measures that have allowed the resumption of activities in all health services, attendance at health... Read more

SENEGALCommunity mobilisation and health promotionPromoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Context Senegal has relatively low sexual and reproductive health (SRH) indicators, particularly in terms of the realisation of sexual and reproductive rights (SRHR) for young people and adolescents (Y&A). Access rates to family planning and contraceptive methods are low overall, and rates of pregnancy, early marriage and gender-based violence are high, with strong regional disparities within the country. However, the country presents a context that is conducive to targeted actions on these subjects, with a relatively well-developed legal framework, although largely unenforced, an active civil society that brings together a wide range of actors, and several interventions carried out by...
