Scientific Reflection Through Field-Work
The Issues
Research is often separated from the implementation of activities or health interventions. There is a wide gap between the development of efficient interventions and their optimal execution in real situations, particularly in countries with low incomes.
In order to improve the quality which is accessible, countries need to be able to question their own practices and to adapt them in view of the context, to test solutions to recurring problems, and to evaluate the benefits of some new innovations.
In order to do this, the development of operational research capacities within the countries where there is support from Solthis is essential. This is because it shows how to reinforce, critically examine and potentially modify interventions on the ground.
Our Priorities
Our Approach: A Dual Focus, both Academic and Multidisciplinary, and On the Ground
Operational research can engage, alternately or simultaneously according to the requirements of the analysis, almost the entire range of scientific disciplines: biomedical, clinical and public health-related, including social, human and economic sciences. Solthis therefore uses multidisciplinary academic expertise in order to take account of all types of health problems. Created by university doctors, supported by a group of scientific experts in health and in development, Solthis has developed a number of partnerships with research and public health institutions, university hospitals, university faculties, networks of partnerships, particularly African ones, and with other humanitarian groups.
Our Actions
Due to its multidisciplinary expertise, Solthis supports research in a number of different ways:
Through contributing to the analysis of the operatives on the ground, helping them to transform their operational problems into questions of research, and taking them forward to implement research projects. Solthis reinforces the capacities of local operatives with methodological training, creating a protocol suitable for publications and scientific communications but also for ad hoc instruction in operational research.
Through helping to identify new solutions based upon scientific evidence. A number of low-income countries have at their disposal meaningful data but little means of interpretation. Operational research allows for the exploitation of this data in order to identify strategies, interventions, tools and new forms of understanding, which in turn help to improve the quality, efficiency and performance of the health system, health services and programmes fighting against disease.
Through supporting the dissemination of the results of research projects to policy makers, in order to ensure that the results are taken into account in practice. As a result of operational research, Solthis can generate new ways of thinking as regards health programmes and the improvement of counter strategies. We are then in a position to offer specific recommendations, supported by in-depth research. The results of the operational research can also assist in advocating for changes in policies and practices.
Through promoting the results of research projects and their authors at international scientific events. Solthis contributes to the promulgation of the results of research projects within a community of “peers” supported by the scientific community: producing articles; authors participating at international conferences; and organizing seminars and workshops for scientific discussion, both on the ground and in Paris.
