GUINEAFighting HIV / AIDSImprove the health of children in Africa

Dowload the project sheet CONTEXT Despite progress made in the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission in recent years, it is estimated that only 37% of pregnant women in Guinea currently receive HIV testing during pregnancy. Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of the virus is a critical issue, as 80% of infected and untreated children are at risk of dying before the age of 3. In order to address this issue, the IPOP project aims at implementing an early HIV diagnosis for newborns exposed to HIV and measurement of the HIV viral load of their mothers at delivery through the implementation of the Point of Care (POC) technology. The Point of Care machines allow... Read more

Discover the cloture video (in french) below Improving access to care for people living with HIV and affected by TB Background Niger is struggling to integrate all the components necessary for the continuous availability of laboratory services and to ensure the link with health care teams for access to better quality care for patients. This poor performance is due to shortcomings throughout the healthcare chain in relation to laboratories. In terms of HIV care, Niger is lagging far behind in achieving the UNAIDS targets of 90-90-90. As of December 2018, Niger had 35 300 people living with HIV (PLHIV), of whom 72% knew their status, 54% were receiving antiretroviral... Read more

The project is experimenting a patient-centred approach to HIV care through capacity building for users, healthcare professionals and decision-makers. Context Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea are significantly lagging behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS despite relatively good decentralization of health care services. In Côte d'Ivoire, the main problem for people living with HIV (PLWHA) remains access to knowledge of their status: more than one PLWHA in two (61%) is still unaware of their serological status. In Guinea, only 58% of PLWHA know their status, of whom only 51% are receiving ARV treatment and 19% have an undetectable viral load. These results... Read more

Put patients at the centre of the health system to improve the quality of care and better defend their health rights. Context : In Sierra Leone, only 33% of patients' antiretroviral treatment needs are covered, and only 15% for children. People living with HIV are weakly involved in decisions about their rights and health by lack of knowledge and communication with professionals. The health system is deficient both in terms of monitoring (since the rate of people lost of touch remains high) and in terms of human resources, often underqualified, with negative attitudes towards PLWHA. The first phase of the Empower project strengthened the capacities of health personnel to provide... Read more

Strengthen health systems and ensure the active involvement of communities, especially women and youth, in the national health decision-making process Context Since the 1980s, Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone have been affected by violent conflicts, natural disasters and large-scale epidemics. Even though the three countries are more or less stable since the end of the Ebola epidemic (2014-2016), numerous crises and shocks have undermined their public services, which are currently struggling to meet the needs of local populations. National health indicators are particularly revealing of the weakness of health services and the precariousness of women, their children and young... Read more

NIGERCAPACITY BUILDINGGOVERNANCE AND HEALTH POLICIESHUMAN RESOURCES FOR HEALTHChild HealthImprove the health of children in Africa

Reduce child mortality by effectively diagnosing and monitoring cases of respiratory distress, which remain among the leading causes of death among children under 5 years in Niger and around the world. Background In 2018, an estimated 5.3 million children worldwide will have died before their fifth birthday from diseases, most of which are preventable and treatable, including pneumonia. One of the most effective measures to improve the detection of seriously ill children and reduce child mortality is to ensure that tools for testing for serious diseases are available and accessible at the level of primary health centres. Under the coordination of ALIMA, the AIRE project... Read more

A social, political and medical approach to improving rights and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for young people and adolescents to reduce new HIV infections and unwanted pregnancies. Context : In Niger, where nearly 70% of the population is under 25 years of age and where HIV/AIDS prevalence among 15-24 year olds is 1% (compared to 0.7 in the general population), youth is a strategic issue in the fight against HIV/AIDS and in improving sexual and reproductive health. Especially since the increased risk of infection is highlighted due to limited knowledge of STI/HIV, lack of access to reliable and good quality information, socio-cultural... Read more

Context In French-speaking Africa, the lack of a pharmaceutical drug production unit obliges pharmaceutical wholesalers (public and private) to import almost all of their need for drugs with risks of major defects in pharmaceutical quality. In addition, the absence of a national laboratory to control the quality of functional drugs in line with international standards is a major handicap to the protection of the population and to the pharmaceutical of these developing countries (DCs). Indeed, currently in Africa, six laboratories are pre-qualified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) but none are located in francophone West Africa. In this region, the low control of... Read more

However, in some specific subgroups, this prevalence may be much higher, reaching 41.9% in key populations in Senegal or 12.2% among sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire. Today, less than half of people living with HIV in West and Central Africa know their HIV status. Increasing access to testing is therefore essential to reduce HIV / AIDS-related mortality and... Download the project brochure Context In Guinea, the coverage of the needs of people living with HIV is low, reflecting in particular the low quality of care . Several factors explain this finding: organization of CEP not adapted to patients’ needs, access to essential examination for limited viral load, psychosocial support for non-functional patients and a relationship between caregivers and patients characterized by poor listening and stigmatizing behaviours. Faced with these needs, Guinean civil society is struggling to defend patients’ rights. The PACTES project aims to experiment a patient-centred care. To this end, new HIV care models are being tested, in... Read more

Among a consortium made up of 8 institutions, Solthis is responsible for the implementation of the project in Sierra Leone. The objective of the project is to reduce childhood tuberculosis mortality by improving TB screening in children under 5 years old, including those who are HIV-positive and suffering from severe pneumonia, a demographic among which tuberculosis infection is often present. In 2015, 1 million new TB cases were documented worldly and 210 000... Read more
